Enter the Comfy Cone made by All Four Paws, a company based out of Los Angeles, California.
They've done nothing short of revolutionize the e-collar, implementing the kind of design savvy
that's brilliantly simple and makes you think "Of course, why didn't we have this sooner". They've
taken the hard plastic e-collar and made it soft and comfortable, yet just as effective and sturdy.
Let's look at the advantages of the Comfy Cone.
First, the Comfy Cone is made of nylon fabric laminated onto ½ inch foam, which is soft and
yielding so it's more comfortable for dogs to wear when lying down because it will lay flat
underneath their heads without putting any pressure on their necks. With a plastic e-collar your dog
can still lie down but it can be uncomfortable for them because the plastic remains resistant and will
not flatten underneath them.
In terms of price, we think the Comfy Cone is competitive when you weigh all of its benefits.
Typically plastic e-collars will range from $10 - $25 depending on the brand and where you purchase
it, where as the Comfy Cone will cost $20 - $40 depending on the size requirements for your dog.
In our opinion the Comfy Cone is a significant improvement upon the traditional plastic e-collar and
worth the extra money. Worth noting, the Comfy Cone is also available for cats.
There may be times when you need to restrict your dog from having access to certain areas of their
body that they would like to lick or chew, such as when they are recovering from a surgery or have
skin irritations. Typically in these situations veterinarians will recommend that you utilize an
Elizabethan collar, also known as an e-collar, for your dog. Unfortunately the traditional plastic
e-collar designed for dogs leave a lot to be desired in terms of comfort and because of this most
dogs would probably prefer it never existed. As Dug, the lovable Golden Mutt in the 2009 Pixar film
"Up" declared after being put in an e-collar "I do not like the cone of shame." Dogs feel
uncomfortable with a cone on their head and with traditional plastic e-collars their feelings seem
justifiable.
Traditional Elizabethan collars are made of hard plastic and
vary in sizes based on the size requirements of the dog. The
purpose of the e-collar is to prevent the dogs' mouth from
accessing any part of their body, and generally if the collar
is sized correctly for your dog it will perform this function.
Besides doing the job, plastic e-collars can be relatively
inexpensive if you shop around, most veterinarian offices
sell them, and you can also find them at local pet supply
stores or through online retailers. Until recently, plastic
e-collars were the only widely available option for dogs and
their owners. Thankfully this is not your only option any
longer.
Another area where the Comfy Cone is far superior is ease at which you can get it on and off the
dog. With the traditional plastic e-collar you pre-fit the collar, and then need to pull it over the dogs
head. This can be somewhat challenging for the owner especially if you have an uncooperative dog.
It's also stressful for the dog because they have no idea why you are trying to push their head
through a relatively small looking hole in a plastic cone. Additionally, after you manage to get the
plastic e-collar over their head you will need to use some sort of material to secure it around their
necks so it will not fall off (twine, rope, and surgical gauze have all been known to work). To put on
the Comfy Cone you simply pull apart the Velcro fasteners on the outside of the cone to open it,
then wrap it around the dogs head/neck and re-secure the Velcro - it literally takes 10 seconds if
you don't have to chase your dog down. Your dog will have less anxiety because you don't actually
have to thread it over their head; you simply wrap it around them as if you were putting on a scarf.
One other big difference between the Comfy Cone and the traditional plastic e-collar is that the
Comfy Cone is made of non-transparent material, whereas the traditional e-collar is more often
transparent plastic. The non-transparent material in the Comfy Cone is another enhancement
designed to reduce stress because dogs are less anxious about unknown objects in their peripheral
vision than with the traditional plastic e-collar that provides a distorted view of peripheral objects
that can make your dog uneasy.
Storing a Comfy Cone when not in use is easy and it takes up little space because it folds flat.
Secured with the Velcro fasteners on the outside, it takes up about the same amount of space as a
pair of folded cargo shorts. The plastic e-collar flattens too, but it turns into a sheet of plastic
about 3 feet long and is not convenient to store.
Other benefits of the Comfy Cone:
In addition to being more comfortable for dogs resting, the
Comfy Cone is also a lot easier to deal with when your dog is
on the move. If you've ever seen a dog with an e-collar, odds
are that you have seen a dog have trouble navigating through
doorways, into their kennel, etc, because the edges of the
collar can get stuck easily on obstacles. This happens because
traditional plastic e-collars do not have much give or
flexibility, and the dog is not used to needing to compensate
for a huge cone on their head when moving around. Where
plastic e-collars miss the mark, the Comfy Cone again gets it
right, as it easily yields when it is pushed against something
like a doorframe, allowing the dog to get where it's going with
little trouble or discomfort.
