The Monks of New Skete
Highly Recommended
Almost training "gospel," though that might be considered blasphemous by the Brothers of New
Skete monastery, this book has been around for 32 years and was most recently updated in 2002.
The book covers a ton of content relevant to dog training and behavior, in addition to general dog
maintenance (grooming and nutrition) and also reviews the stories of dogs in religious literature.
While a lot of books hold a training method "on high," this book takes a common-sense approach to
training and interacting with dogs. For example, it takes on the issue of discipline-a concept that
inherently has a place for all humans and dogs--while many other texts skirt or avoid the subject
altogether. The Monks present specific techniques and important information about when discipline
is appropriate to be used and how exactly to administer it fairly and effectively.
One of the more interesting topics that I haven't seen covered elsewhere in depth is canine
environments. They discuss, in detail, the characteristics, benefits and drawbacks of the city, the
suburb, the country, and outdoors in general and make specific breed and personality
recommendations for each environment. There is also detailed description and pictures for teaching
obedience commands.
This is a very complete and readable overall guide to dog ownership. From what to consider before
you go out and get a dog, to dealing with behavior issues, this book touches on most things
dog-related. However, if you're dealing with a specific behavior problem, such as aggression, you
will probably find a specialized resource that's wholly devoted to that topic more helpful. The book is
well-written and engaging, and discusses the spiritual and emotional needs of dogs, a topic that is
largely ignored in other training manuals or dealt with in the context behaviorism (operant and
classical conditioning).
The Monks also author a book devoted specifically to puppy care and training, "The Art of Raising a
Puppy."
